Aurora Hunting Guide for Parents

Aurorae is a light phenomenon observed near the Earth’s magnetic poles. There are many good places in the world to observe the aurorae. The most important thing is to fit into the so-called aurora belt. This strip covers the area of Finnish Lapland, the northern part of Norway: from Lofoten to the Svalbard archipelago, the northern part of Sweden, the Abisko area, northern Iceland and the northern part of Russia, including the Nenets Autonomous District.

Popular Sites in Europe

  • Norway: Lofoten
  • Finland: Rovaniemi
  • Sweden: Abisko
  • Iceland: Rejkjavik

The phenomenon of aurorae appears in the sky throughout the year, and we have a chance to admire it in the northern hemisphere from mid-September to early April. Of course, you can see the aurorae outside this designated time, but it will be our luck ; -) All this is related to the occurrence of polar day and night, because the aurorae is visible only at night. It is worth emphasizing, however, that there are no better or worse months to observe the aurora.

What to Take With You for “Aurorae Hunting”?

When going to the area where the aurorae occurs, we dress up for “onions” or layers. This will protect us from the cold and frost. It is worth choosing things made of good materials that will actually protect us from the cold.

Layer One

Thermoactive underwear or merino wool underwear. Mandatory long sleeves and long legs. Thin wool or cotton socks.

Layer Two

Sweater or fleece, cotton trousers and thick wool socks.

Layer Three

A thin softshell jacket, waterproof trousers with warming (ski trousers are perfect), woolen gloves. Also worth getting: disposable hand and foot warmers.

Layer Four

The last layer: down jacket, warm thick woolen cap and winter warmed shoes! Remember that hands and feet freeze the fastest!

Additional Equipment

  • Headlamp
  • A bag of wood and a lighter (available at petrol stations or building markets)
  • Thermos

And so dressed and equipped, we can only go hunting for the aurora glade!
