Friluftsliv – outdoor life
The first thing we should start with is an explanation of the term Friluftsliv. It is a deeply rooted in Scandinavian culture philosophy of life that promotes regular outdoor presence and closeness to nature. Spending time outdoors every day is deeply rooted in Swedish culture. We include walks in the forest, watching nature or simply relaxing outdoors, regardless of the weather.
Daily cycling
Bicycles are not only a way of recreation, but above all a daily means of transport for many Swedes. Extensive cycling infrastructure in cities, paths separated from car traffic and special signaling make commuting or cycling school safe and popular for most of the year. Even in winter, when snow falls, many Swedes do not give up their bike, putting on tires with spikes.
Nordic walking
Another popular activity for Nordic walking. Walking with poles has gained great popularity in Sweden among people of all ages. This simple activity, involving the upper parts of the body, is practiced in city parks, forests and on specially designated routes. Nordic walking groups are also often organized, and they regularly meet for joint marches.
“Fika” combined with a walk
Traditional Swedish coffee break – “fika” – is often combined with a short walk. Especially during lunch break at work, many Swedes go out for a 15-20 minute walk, and then return to the office for a coffee and a cake. This daily practice combines physical activity with a social element.
Swimming in natural reservoirs
Sweden, with thousands of lakes and a long coastline, has a strong outdoor swimming culture. In the warmer months, a popular custom is morning or evening dip in the nearest lake or sea. In winter, this tradition is continued in the form of “vinterbad” – winter baths in hollows, often combined with a visit to the sauna.
Swedish jogging – “vardagsmotion”
The Swedish term “vardagsmotion” can be translated as “everyday movement”. This means consciously entangling physical activity into the routine of the day, e.g. getting off the bus a stop earlier, choosing stairs instead of an elevator or performing simple exercises while watching TV.
Outdoor activities in the workplace
Many Swedish companies actively promote a healthy lifestyle among their employees by organizing walk and talk meetings (walking meetings) or offering “friskvårdstimme” – an hour of physical activity within the working time, which can be used for a gym, swimming pool or just a walk.
Allemansrätten – the right of everyone to nature
The popular activities of the Swedes are supported by a unique law called “allemansrätten” (the right of every human to nature), which provides universal access to forests, beaches and other natural areas, even if they are private property. Thanks to this, Swedes can freely wander or camping practically everywhere, which encourages regular outdoor activity!
All of the activities we have listed have one thing in common – they are simple, do not require special equipment or skills, and thanks to them the Swedes remain in good condition and health, which is confirmed by their high position in the rankings of length and quality of life.
