The Danish island of Rømø is the perfect spot. It sits in the North Sea, right next to Germany, and is packed with beautiful, wild nature. The landscapes here are truly one of a kind. Best of all, getting there is quick and easy!

Endless Beaches (A Desert in the Middle of Europe)

Rømø’s biggest draw is its massive sandy beaches. They are so wide—stretching between 2 and 4 kilometers in some spots—that when you stand at the edge, you can barely see the water. It feels just like being in a real desert.

Drivers get to experience something totally unique here. You can legally drive your car or camper right onto Lakolk and Sønderstrand beaches for free. No need to worry about getting stuck; the sand is packed tight. People just open up their trunks, set up lawn chairs, fire up the grill, and hang out all day. It’s also the perfect spot to watch the sunset without even leaving your car.

A Whole New World Under the Water

Rømø is part of the Wadden Sea National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Twice a day, something magical happens here. During low tide, the sea pulls back for miles, uncovering a massive area of the muddy seafloor, known locally as “wadden.”

This is the perfect time for a walk on the ocean floor. You can safely wander for miles into the sea, collect beautiful shells, and spot tiny crabs. Guided wild oyster-picking tours are also a huge hit—you can literally eat them fresh right out of the water! If you’re lucky, you might even spot seals sunbathing on the sandbanks in the distance.

A Paradise for Kites and Wheels

There is almost always a crisp breeze blowing across the island, making Rømø a dream for anyone who loves staying active. The sky here is nearly always full of color thanks to the massive kites flown by both kids and adults. Every September, the island hosts a huge Kite Festival that draws thousands of people from all over the world.

The other big attraction is kitebuggying and blokarting. These are special three-wheeled carts powered by either a sail or a kite. Thanks to the wide-open spaces and hard sand on Sønderstrand beach, these carts can hit incredible speeds. It’s a fantastic sight to watch!

Whaling History and Great Food

The island has a pretty fascinating past. Back in the 17th and 18th centuries, many locals hunted whales. They were ship captains and made a fortune. Even today, you can see their beautiful old thatched-roof houses scattered across the island. The most famous one is Kommandørgården—it used to belong to a wealthy captain and is now a museum. The village of Juvre has a cool quirk, too: you can see a fence there made entirely out of a real whale’s jawbone, built all the way back in 1772!

After a long day on the beach, you’ll definitely want to grab a bite to eat. The port of Havneby is full of great fish fry joints and seafood shops. You have to try the local tiny shrimp (called Rømørejer). They taste amazing simply served on fresh bread.

If you are craving some relaxation, Scandinavian vibes, and a taste of wild nature, Rømø is the place to be!

Looking for a cool getaway where you can actually escape the crowds?
