A day trip to Heligoland: Red cliffs, seals, and duty-free shopping

If you’re looking for a trip that makes you feel like you’re at the edge of the world, Heligoland is a great choice! It’s a tiny island in the North Sea that looks nothing like the rest of Germany. There are no cars, the air is super fresh, and life just moves at a slower pace here.

Getting there
Most people visit Heligoland on a day trip. You can get there on a modern, high-speed catamaran (it takes about 2 to 2.5 hours) or a traditional ferry. The boat ride itself is half the fun—there’s a great vibe when you’re out on the open sea watching the coastline fade away.

The red cliffs and “Lange Anna”
As soon as you step off the boat, you’ll see the massive red cliffs that the island is famous for. The best thing to do is take the walking path around the upper part of the island, known as the Oberland. This trail leads you to the iconic “Lange Anna”—a tall, red rock stack sticking straight out of the ocean. It looks incredible, especially with thousands of seabirds circling above. It’s the perfect spot for photos!

Meeting the seals
This is a must-do. Right next to the main island is a smaller, sandy one called Düne. You can hop on a tiny shuttle boat and get there in just a few minutes. What’s waiting for you? Beautiful white beaches and… seals!

Groups of common seals and grey seals just lounge around on the sand. They’re used to people, so you can watch them from fairly close (just make sure to keep a respectful distance!). Seeing these animals in the wild instead of a zoo is an amazing experience.

Duty-Free shopping
Heligoland has a special status, meaning it’s exempt from customs duties and VAT. This makes the island a paradise for bargain hunters. What’s worth picking up?

  • Perfume and cosmetics: The selection is huge, and prices are much lower than in regular drugstores.
  • Alcohol and sweets: You can find premium brands at really good prices.
  • Clothes and jewelry: A lot of people come here mainly to refresh their wardrobe without breaking the bank.

Quick tips for your day trip:

  • Comfortable shoes: Even though the island is small, you’ll be doing a lot of walking, especially heading up to the cliffs.
  • A warm hoodie: Even if it’s hot at the port, it’s almost always windy and chilly out at sea and up on the cliffs.
  • Watch the clock: On a day trip, you usually have about 3 to 4 hours on the island. Keep an eye on the ferry’s departure time, because catching a different way back can be tricky!

Heligoland is the perfect mix of nature and shopping. If you have a free day and want to see something unique, this trip definitely won’t disappoint.
