When traveling by motorhome to Scandinavia or other places, it is always worth preparing well to fully enjoy the trip. Here are some practical tips that may be useful for us.

Camper preparation

Before leaving, we should check the technical condition of our motorhome – brakes, battery and tires – because roads in Norway and Sweden in particular are demanding in some places. Let us remember about an additional fuel canister, especially in Norway, where petrol stations can be many kilometers apart.

Although most of us go on a trip in the summer, it is worth taking enough warm clothes and blankets or sleeping bags with us. The northern countries can surprise you with low temperatures, especially in the mountains.

Route and stop planning

In order to make our trip run in a nice and peaceful atmosphere, it is worth planning a route and stops where we will want to stay. Sweden and Norway are both countries that offer plenty of wild camping sites. We can stay for the night almost everywhere outside the cities. However, remember to check the local regulations to make sure that the chosen place is allowed. In Denmark, the rules for wild camping are more restrictive. Here it is worth using campsites or special zones designed for motorhomes, and there is really something to choose from – we described examples of campsites in a separate article.

Road tolls and regulations

As far as road tolls are concerned, in Norway and Denmark we have to take into account tolls on roads or bridges. Bridge charges, such as the Øresund bridge connecting Denmark to Sweden, are high, but payments can be made online or on-site. For trips to Norway, it is worth registering in advance in the AutoPASS system, which automatically calculates fares.

Fuel and refueling

In both Norway and Sweden, stations are rare, especially in smaller towns. Therefore, it is worth checking the availability of stations on the route in advance to avoid the situation that we will stand somewhere in the middle of nowhere ; -)

When it comes to refueling, in Scandinavia, most stations are self-service and accept card payments, but it is worth having a credit card with you because debit cards do not always work.

Traffic rules

The regulations in both Norway and Sweden are very restrictive and can cost us a lot if we do not comply with them. Speeding in both countries can result in high fines or even the loss of a driving license. The rules are enforced very strictly, especially if there are speed cameras nearby.

When driving through woodlands, especially in Sweden and Norway, we must be careful about animals that often appear on the roads. Nobody would like to meet a moose or a reindeer – face to face : )

Food & Supplies

When going especially to Norway or Sweden, it is worth to stock up on basic food products earlier (make a list of what we will need). Local prices may be higher than in other European countries. Remember that Norway is one of the most expensive countries, so it is worth planning your shopping in advance. But let’s not save on trying local delicacies, such as Norwegian brunost (brown cheese) or Swedish Köttbullar meatballs. For those who like fish, we recommend pickled herring Surströmming.

When to go to Scandinavia

The best time to travel by camper to Scandinavia is from May to September. In Denmark it is even mid-October. The days are long then and we have a better chance of a nicer weather. If we plan our trip in winter, let’s make sure that our motorhome is well equipped for low temperatures and harder road conditions.

Nature and activities

Scandinavia is a real paradise for nature lovers. Norway, Sweden or Denmark are the perfect areas for anglers! Scandinavia will also include attractions for trekking enthusiasts, hiking in the fjords and mountains, kayaking or cycling.

A trip by camper to Scandinavia is not only an opportunity to admire picturesque landscapes, but also a chance to get in touch with wild nature and discover new culture, people or cuisine.
