Trekking in Finland. National parks of Finland

Finland is certainly a paradise on earth for those who love hiking. Firstly, because we have a lot of trails, and secondly, because they are fantastically maintained! However, despite its beautiful terrain, Finland is unfortunately still the least popular destination among the Scandinavian countries. And that’s a pity because it’s an equally beautiful country that has a lot to offer to people who will come here! We would like to encourage those who like trekking to visit Finland!!! and invite you to national parks, but there is really something to choose from ; -)

National Parks

In Finland we have as many as 40 National Parks!. You can find the whole list on the official website about Finnish National Parks. The parks can be found all over the country and what’s interesting there you can see landscapes typical of Finland, i.e. valleys, forests, cataracts and lakes. At any time of the year, you can go trekking or climbing, depending on who likes what. Admission to the parks is free, and in some you can also spend the night in cottages for free. By the way, we can also go for blueberries or mushrooms ; -) Besides the beautiful nature, Finnish parks also have a great asset in their facilities. First of all, in all parks we have very well marked and maintained trails. Near the entrance to the trail we have information boards with the description and map of the trail. On the trail we have places for lighting bonfires, shelters and roofing. Most of the trails have designated campsites, cottages for rent and free huts. If you plan your trekking well, you will not have to pay anything! All you have to do is look for a place where free huts have been set up and campsites have been designated. In the larger parks at the entrance there are Visitor Centers, where you can download free maps, learn about the conditions on the trail and report your desire to spend the night in a paid cottage. In many parks there are also Nature Centers, which serve as tourist information and are also cultural centers. You can see thematic exhibitions or see a natural film there.

Rules of using the Park

Unless otherwise stipulated in the park’s regulations, Finnish law allows any citizen and visitor to: – hiking, cycling where there is no ban – pitching a tent anywhere (in the National Parks, of course, in designated areas) at an appropriate distance from homes, – fishing for fish that you need a permit for, but usually you can buy in any store or information center and it is not expensive, – trekking, skiing and fishing on frozen lakes, rivers and the sea. Of course, you must not: – destroy nature, strip protected plants – fire bonfires in places not intended for this – unless we have permission to do so – drive cars outside the designated roads, unless we have a permit to do so from the owner of the area Before we leave the park, we have to take what we have taken with us, mainly garbage! And above all, respect nature and the fact that the Finns allow us so much!

And finally, the names of the three parks that we recommend to visit if you are going to Finland, and these are: Oulanka National Park Urho Kekkonen National Park Malla Nature Reserve

So there is nothing else to go trekking in the beautiful Finnish national parks!
