New travel rules? Check your passport before you buy tickets!

When planning a holiday, we usually think about choosing a destination, looking for attractive hotels or promotions for airline tickets. Meanwhile, one seemingly obvious detail can thwart all plans — a passport. Many people think that if the document is in a drawer and still valid, then after the problem. Unfortunately, this is a common mistake. Even minor damage, lack of free pages or the approaching expiry date may mean that we will not be allowed on board or cross the border in one direction only. Before you start planning flights, accommodation and holidays for 2026, check your passport carefully. This simple step will help you avoid stress, expenses and unpleasant surprises just before your departure.

What should I check in my passport before traveling?

Many travelers forget that the mere fact of having a valid passport does not always guarantee the possibility of entering another country. In the case of countries outside the European Union, the principle often applies that the document must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of crossing the border. In other countries, passports are required to be valid for a minimum of 3 months after intended return. Therefore, before you buy a ticket, be sure to check the requirements of the destination country. Such information may decide whether you board at all.

The passport that accompanies many journeys may become worn out over time. Although small bends or abrasions are not a problem, they are:

· spilled carcases or spots,

· unclear personal data,

· torn or falling pages,

· traces of moisture, discoloration or cracks in the cover –

They can make the official suspect and refuse to accept the document. In this situation, it is safer to get a new passport before you set off on your journey.

Although a passport is not needed within the European Union, many travelers still use it as an identity document or choose directions where its presentation is mandatory – such as Turkey, Egypt, Thailand or the USA. It is also worth knowing that some countries require at least one or two blank pages in the document. If your passport is almost completed, do not hesitate to exchange it.

Visa requirements and document checks – what should I check before traveling?

Traveling in Europe does not usually require much paperwork, but the situation is complicated when flying outside the European Union. Many countries on other continents – especially in Asia, Africa or South America – require visas or additional entry permits.

Before you book tickets, it is necessary to check the current entry regulations on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of your country and on the website of the embassy of the country you are going to. Requirements can change dynamically, and sometimes travelers are required to provide proof of hotel reservation, return ticket or financial means for their stay.

In the event that a document is destroyed or lost just before the planned trip, many countries make it possible to obtain a temporary passport. However, it is worth checking in advance whether the destination country accepts temporary travel documents. Not all countries consider them sufficient for entry.

Checking this information in advance will help you avoid problems and enjoy your trip 😉
