Gibraltar is a small British territory located on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain. Even though it’s tiny, it’s packed with unique sights you won’t find anywhere else in Europe. If you’re planning a day trip, here are the spots you shouldn’t miss.
Crossing the Runway
This is usually the first thing you’ll experience. Historically, the main road into town crossed directly over the airport’s runway. While cars now use a newly built tunnel under the runway, pedestrians and cyclists can still walk right across the tarmac! When a plane is taking off or landing, the barriers come down, and you have to wait for it to pass. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can experience this.
The Rock of Gibraltar and the Monkeys
The Rock is the ultimate symbol of Gibraltar. The best way to get to the top is by taking the Cable Car. Once you’re up there, two things await:
- The Views: On a clear day, you can see all the way across the Strait of Gibraltar to Africa (Morocco) and across the Spanish coast.
- The Barbary Macaques: These are the only wild monkeys in Europe. They’re great for photos, but be careful—they are wild animals and are notorious for snatching food or even unzipping backpacks.
St. Michael’s Cave
Inside the Rock lies a massive natural cave. It’s incredibly impressive because of its sheer scale and beautiful stalactites. Nowadays, they run immersive light shows inside, and the largest cavern has even been turned into a unique auditorium for concerts.
The Great Siege Tunnels
For centuries, Gibraltar was a heavily guarded fortress. Miles of tunnels were carved into the Rock for defense. You can walk through them today to see how soldiers prepared for battle and where they positioned their massive cannons.
Europa Point
This is the southernmost point of Gibraltar. You’ll find a distinctive red-and-white lighthouse here, a beautiful mosque, and a monument to General Sikorski. It’s a great spot for a walk with an uninterrupted view right across the water to Africa.
Strolling Down Main Street
To wrap up your day, take a walk down the city’s Main Street. It’s full of British charm—you’ll see the famous red phone booths and can grab some classic fish and chips. Gibraltar is also a VAT-free jurisdiction, making it a popular spot for picking up duty-free goods like perfume, alcohol, or electronics.
A Few Practical Tips:
- Documents: Don’t forget your passport or national ID card, as you will be crossing an international border.
- Currency: They use the Gibraltar Pound (which is pegged to the British Pound), but you can pay by card or in Euros almost everywhere. Just keep in mind that the Euro exchange rate in shops usually isn’t in your favor.
- Parking: It’s highly recommended to leave your car in a parking lot on the Spanish side (in La Línea de la Concepción) and walk across the border. This saves you from sitting in long, unpredictable queues at the vehicle checkpoints.
Even though Gibraltar is small, it has a vibe all its own. It’s the perfect destination for a quick getaway if you want to see something completely different from the rest of mainland Europe.
